Running
Monday, August 23, 2010 at 2:46PM I'll preface this by saying that for the most part I hate running. I love playing sports and being active, but I've never understood running for the sake of running. We went through a brief get-in-shape phase in Brooklyn, where we would walk to and then run the 4 mile loop around Prospect Park. We (er... I) only actually ran the whole thing once without stopping. Usually I got a cramp, got heartburn, couldn't breathe, felt like I was going to poop myself... the usual running woes. I remember calculating in my head how much longer Nick's legs were than mine, therefore giving him longer strides and making his run more energy efficient. I tried, to no avail, to convince him that was why I was always the one complaining.
Anyway, it's a different story here. I've been going running almost every other day for the last two weeks and actually really enjoying it. Lots of factors have helped with this: running with music, not feeling the need to stay up with Nick, new sports bra, the weather. I also got an iPhone App that records my run and pacing using GPS. This gives me some sort of value for each run and shows my (tiny) improvements, which is encouraging.
Most of all though, it is so pretty to run here. There are miles of trails all throughout the city and along the river. I don't feel bored like I used to. It's kind of like going on a hike in fast-forward, which is very handy in this fast-paced society.
We signed up for a 5K, which we'll be running with our friends James and Lance. The race is on The 23rd of October. Nick's already getting ready:
